Top 10 Board Games to Have a Fun Game Night

My wife and I are big board game fans. We love a good board or group game. Usually when we get together with some friends, playing some sort of game is a must. Ever since we were in our teens we loved to play a good board game. Below is a list of my 10 favorite games that we like to play together with friends and family.

1. Settlers of CATAN

This is a very fun strategic game. The game involves, building settlements, cities, roads, and trade resources. This game can be played with 3-6 people.  However, if you want to play with 5-6 players you need to invest into the an extension pack in order for you to do this. In addition, the game has other variation to the game that can be added, which are called expansions. For example like the Seafarers expansion or Cities and Knights expansion which both requires you to have original board game pieces. The game usually takes 30-60 minutes to play. And usually couples can get very competitive in this game amongst each other. Maybe not the idea game for couples but regardless it is a ton of fun.

2. Ticket to Ride

This is another strategic game but is much more easy going compared to Catan. In this game you get destinations that you must complete from point A to point B. Your have to collect colored tickets and use them in order to place the trains on a path. But remember you are playing against 2-3 other players that might block your path. This game also has a lot of different maps that you can play but requires either the American or the Europe board game for the game pieces. This is another that we’ve played a lot lately. The maps are United Kingdom, Netherlands,

3. Clue

It’s been awhile since we played this game; however, it is still one of my favorite games. It is a mystery crime game where you have to figure out who was murdered, with what weapon and in what room by asking a series of questions. This is a very fun board game. We currently have the Clue – Detective Game (2005 edition) shown in picture on the right. However, we have played Discover the Secrets and recommend that one over the classic version. In the discover of the secrets they have additional cards called Intrigue Cards that have special abilities like, take another turn, or you get to see a card that was just shown. Basically evens out the playing field at times. If you love strategy and figuring things out then this game is for you. You need at minimum of 4 people to play to have a decent game. We can’t wait until our kids get a bit older to play this game with them.

Newer version of clue called discovery the secrets is a lot more fun and has more twists.         Clue - Detective Game (2005 edition)

Newer version of Clue with more twists and special abilities make this game fun.

4. Risk

This game is mostly played by guys when girls are out for a baby shower or some other girls night out event. Well at least that was the case when we all didn’t have at least 2 kids each. Now it’s a little harder to play this game because how long it takes to finish the game. This game takes a good 2-4 hours to fully play it. However, it’s a ton of fun as you try to conquer the world. We usually never have enough time to completely finish it but it doesn’t stop us from trying. You want to play this with at least 4 players and it goes up to 6 players.

5. Dutch Blitz

A Vonderful Goot Game! This is a Amish game that we learned from while visiting our friends in PA. It’s a speed game that never gets old and is a ton of fun. This game is for players 2-4, however, you can always get an expansion pack which will allow you to play up to 8 players. We’ve never tried that many players but definitely need to.

6. Monopoly Deal

A card version of the classic monopoly. The game play is much quicker then the board game making this into a fun activity. A game usually lasts between 20 – 40 mins depending how many people your playing with. Can be played with 2-6 people, but we have played it with 8 before and it was still a ton of fun.

Deal Breaker - The post powerful card in the game.

7. Taboo

This is like charades except with words. You get a card with a word you are suppose to describe and there is also 5 other words you can’t use. It’s a great game when you have a big party. We usually play husbands vs wives and the guys always win. Well most of the time we win. (Of course our my wives will argue that it’s not true). Very fun and entertaining.

8. Catch that Phrase

Another fun party game that can be played with a ton of people. The key is to have an equal amount of people but it doesn’t matter how many. Basically, it’s an electronic device that once started has a timer one. There is a word that appears and you have to describe it to your team so that they have to guess it. Once they guess it, you have to pass it to the next person from the opposite team. If the timer runs out in your hands the other team gets a point. Again, this game we play husbands vs wives. There is nothing better the guys vs girls rivalry.

Catch that Phrase is a great game for a party.

9. Rummikub

This is a tile numbers game. It is a lot of fun once you learn how to play. You can play this 2-4 players. This game involves some thinking if you really get into it but trust me it’s not difficult to learn it. You start with 14 tiles and the first person that get’s rid of them all, wins.

10. Dominos

The classic domino’s is always fun to pull out of the closet from time to time. There are different versions and different ways to play this game. Usually you can play 2-5 people. This game is usually face paced and always fun to play. I’m pretty sure everyone has played one version or another of this game. If you haven’t make sure to try it.
