How to remove a bathtub and bathtub drain?
If you’re having trouble figuring out how to remove your bathtub and bathtub drain, you might want to read this article till the end. This is a part of my bathroom remodeling series and if you’re remodeling other parts of your bathroom as well, you might want to check out my other articles in this series which will be listed at the bottom of this article.
So, for removing a bathtub and bathtub drain, you should get these tools before you start.
Tools you’ll need
Step 1: Make sure the tiles around the tub are removed
Removing the tiles around the tub is a prerequisite to removing the tub. This step is typically done after you demo the shower walls.
If you don’t know how to do that, check out my article on how to demolish a bathroom shower.
Step 2: How to remove bathtub drain plug
To remove the bathtub drain plug, you’ll have to unscrew a set of screws which is located under the cap right where my finger is located.
Once you do that, it comes right off.
Step 3: Take a vacuum cleaner to clean the bathtub drain
Since you are going to put tools in the bathtub drain to remove it, you want it cleaned beforehand. I recommend using a vacuum cleaner to clean the bathtub drain.
Step 4: Remove the bolt on the bathtub drain
Now you’ll notice a bolt on the drain. You can remove this bolt with the help of a Channel Lock Plier.
Step 5: Remove the bathtub drain using a drain removal tool
Once the bolt has come off, it’s finally time for the bathtub drain. Remove it with the help of this bathtub drain removal wrench.
The way to use this wrench is to fix one of its ends on the thing you’re tightening or loosening and rotate it by putting a screwdriver through one of its holes.
You can also rotate the drain removal tool with a pipe wrench. I did a bit of both.
Step 6: Remove the other fitting on the bathtub
This one will have two screws that you can easily remove with a drill.
Step 7: Removing the bathtub
By now the bathtub will be fully disconnected and you can lift it up. However, make sure you wear gloves while you are doing so.
Lift up the bathtub from one end and take it out.
